Surveillance, or weather, maybe? Or if you'd never used them at all. Running around looking at the sky doesn't really seem your cup of tea.

They can be used to exercise wind magic in young children, provided one's master is not more interested in reading and rereading old tomes ad nauseum.

No. When someone mentions magic, they are most likely referring to charlatans performing sleight-of-hand parlor tricks to make suckers' money disappear. In general, it isn't real.

Is "magic" that big of a cause of strife? If you practice it yourself, I'd think it would be as difficult for you to imagine life without it as it is for me to imagine life without any technology.

That's true. I wouldn't be of much use in a world without magic. But at the same time, it does lie at the heart of the most bloody wars in our history.

Though that's somewhat reductive, isn't it? I'm sure the nobility is perfectly capable of finding new reasons to throw the world into chaos.
