I gathered--from our chat earlier, you didn't sound like the type who has to struggle for every step forward. But either way, this is pretty simple. With this apparatus you can swim around near the surface and view what's below without having to constantly come up for air.

Coppermouth is right at the mouth of a river, actually. But the water's all so clogged with silt and sludge there'd be no point doin' something like this even if there was somethin' to see.

Maybe far in the future. We're just gettin' it back up an runnin' as a trade town instead of some out-of-the-way boondocks nowhere town.

Just like, we're a stop for ships headin' upriver. There's not much in the town itself 'cept for goat herding and the auto shop. Though now that Shiara's a big deal, that gets some traffic on its own.

That's right. The Widowmaker is the big one we won together.

I hadn't realized it was more Death Race than Indy 500. Was there some sort of combat involved?

—Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a murderer or anythin’. Combat between the racers was against the rules, ‘cept for the Wreckers, who were there for that. Plenty of other ways to die, though, and you could fight wildlife or the locals all you wanted. And they sent all the Wreckers after us at the end there, so it was kill or be killed.

I'm not judging you for causing a few deaths, things happen. I just hadn't realized there was more to the competition than just tech and speed. Seems like a lot to prepare for; I didn't mean to sell you short.

...Yeah. A lot of luck and good instincts too. ‘Specially when you don’t have a bunch of sponsors buyin’ you a fleet of fancy cars.

I should think that by now gaining sponsors would no longer be an issue.

As for me... The head of a tech company came to our orphanage for some promotional event. He happened to be a chess world champion, so I challenged him to adopt my brother and me if I could beat him...and made sure he stuck to his word after I did. Not to say that Kaiba Corporation hasn't grown significantly since I took over as CEO, since it has. Still, when faced with an actual made woman, I can't overlook that I started out with an advantage.

Lucky. Yeah, no way we had opportunities like that.

No way we’re even gonna be let back in Maximum Racing again, though, let alone get sponsors for it. We weren’t s’posed to win, we messed up a bunch of deals by doin’ it, and then we sold off the big prize like a carnival token. Guys in charge aren’t real fond of us now.

What sorta stuff does Kaiba Corporation do?

We're active in several different industries, but are best known for innovations in the entertainment space, not least of all Solid Vision projectors and Duel Disks. ...Card games and holograms, mainly. And going forward, theme parks.

S'pose you'd know a lot more about runnin' somethin' like that than I would, then.

I have organized and hosted a few tournaments. Never a race, though... My advice is to approach someone midway down the current pecking order about partnering. That way they'll know something about what the job entails, but as they're only getting a portion of the control and profits now, they'll be more likely to want to see a new competition succeed where they get a larger slice of the pie.
