[He shrugs. Hiding from the burning daystar is definitely more important to him than maintaining perfect hair. The compliment catches him a little off guard, though.]

Well, since we're both stuck in here for the time being, what do you propose we do? I doubt our hosts would be happy with us just sitting here.

[He wouldn't mind, but they are in a game and there are cameras everywhere, so it goes without saying.]

[Doesn't Yusuke know it. Being a Phantom Thief only makes him hyperaware of the cameras, and the constant feeling of being watched. He's so used to skulking around in the shadows, it isn't pleasant.]

Should we get to know one another? We have more freedom to speak to one another today compared to yesterday's dates.

Ah, truly? Shibuya is one of my favourite spots for people watching.

I'm also from Tokyo; I just finished my second year at Kosei High.

Mhmm! I tend to be very busy most of the time, but on the rare occasions I get a day off I'll also people watch, if I don't feel like reading or otherwise relaxing.

What is it that keeps you so busy?

I have a job that demands a lot of my time and attention...and superiors that constantly watch me now. It's rare that I get a day off.

[Which could be why he's so calm about being here, because this is like a minivacation for him--with death.]

Hmm...I suppose it would be if I was still in school.

You're fine, and no. I was homeschooled.

[It's not a lie, but it's still not the truth yet.]

Ah, I see. [Yusuke has no reason to suspect it's not the full truth, so he nods.]

I received private tuition from my Sensei in addition to attending school, so I can relate, somewhat.

Oh? You lived with your teacher?

[Raises an eyebrow at this.]

I suppose I can somewhat relate to that too. I lived with my caretaker for some time, though he wasn't the one who homeschooled me...

[There's a drink that Josh had made for himself on the center table, which he leans forward to grab and take a sip of. It creates a dramatic pause effect.]

Unless you count teaching me how to be a god.

[Just gonna casually drop that now. He says it as nonchalantly as regarding the weather.]

That's right. He was not only my teacher, but my legal guardian.

[Past tense, anyway. Yusuke grabs some fruit to snack on idly, though he has to pause and tilt his head at what Joshua says next.]

...A god of what? Are you speaking figuratively? [He doesn't look like an actual god, all things considered.]

[This is like the fourth time he's been asked. Maybe he should ask Hanekoma when he gets home. He shrugs lightly in response.]

Shibuya, reincarnation, second chances...any of those could fit, I guess. [Smiles.] I'm speaking quite literally, I assure you.

[A flicker of distrust shows across Yusuke's expression. He frowns.]

Reincarnation and second chances... Can you elaborate on what you mean by that?

You don't believe me?

[Not that he's surprised.]

I run a game in Shibuya that's similar to this one, though not as...crudely put together. You enter the game when you die and give up something important to you, like a memory or your self-image. Whatever the individual deems is more important to them than their life, I take it away for the duration of the game. If they win the game, they get what they lost back and are brought back to life. If they lose, they die permanently.

[Shrugs nonchalantly.]

Such is the way life goes. If it makes you feel any better, whether you believe me or not, I can't do anything with my powers here. I'm as harmless as a lamb~!

I didn't say that I don't believe you. It's your intentions that I'm doubtful of.

[That he runs a game just like this one doesn't seem to make Yusuke very happy either.]

On the one hand, it is generous to give the dead a chance at a second life, but... Just how often do people win? What are the conditions for winning the game?

[Tilts his head at that with a frown.]

My intentions? Right now I only intend to get out of here and go home, the same as everyone else here I imagine.

[Hums in thought as he considers how to answer those questions.]

Winning isn't easy. Players have to prove themselves worthy of being revived, after all. It'd be utter chaos if everyone who entered was a winner and got to go home.

[Shrugs and takes a sip of his drink.]

But, there is usually at least one winner every time the game is run, so I consider that a pretty good win streak. Wouldn't you?

The win conditions are pretty simple: survive and complete missions for the whole week and then defeat the Game Master.

[He's being surprisingly open with Yusuke, but that's probably because he figures most things aren't going to be understood anyway.]

[Yusuke listens patiently, but his expression is only becoming more troubled the more he hears.]

Why do gods insist on carrying out unjust games against humanity...? [He shakes his head, irritated.]

I'm not sure I see the use in making many people suffer over the promise of life, for only one to ultimately prevail. Aren't you tormenting those who should be resting peacefully, by giving them a false promise of hope? Do you enjoy watching them struggle against each other?

Unjust? [Smirk.] I suppose some would see it like that.

I can't speak for other gods, but in my district the game I run serves a greater purpose that ultimately benefits all who participate.

[Shakes his head in response.] Not at all. Those who participate do so voluntarily at the moment of death. No one is forced to be there.

One person may get the chance to return to their normal lives, but I assure you all surviving players will get something of a reward based on their performance.
