I've humoured you so far, but I don't think you understand art, or the mindset of a true artist, at all. I fought hard to help combat greed in the art world; I will never perpetuate it myself. Not when I would become like my Sensei. He robbed the talents of countless children and ruined their lives, all so he could profit from their hard work.

Is that kind of ruthlessness admirable to you?

...For once, my opinion doesn't matter. It's admirable to enough people that you're going to run into someone or several someones, and they're going to try to screw you over. I'm saying protect yourself so you don't end up like those other kids.

I did protect myself. No one is going to take advantage of me ever again, and I won't exploit others in turn. And I didn't need to resort to the corrupt methods of the art world in order to do it.

[Once Yusuke catches up with him, he's frowning. But he won't pester him if Kaiba doesn't want to talk.]

Yes, I agree. But for myself... it wasn't just my Sensei, though he was the one who opened my eyes to the kind of world we live in. There are countless times I've seen twisted adults exploit the weak for power and profit. Even our captors here are just the same, professing to be motivated by ratings...

...Given my knowledge of my stepfather's...predilections...strengthening the powers of the ombudsman's office was one of the things I focused on after I took charge of the company. It is, at times, important to remember the numbers on those spreadsheets are actual people. Still, it can be difficult to break old habits.

[He looks up, quickly looking over to the trees instead; there seems to be a sledge and some other supplies for wood collection, that's a bonus and excellent distraction]

[Yusuke likewise spots the sledge, and is successfully distracted. He heads over and looks through the supplies, picking up an axe for splitting wood.]

Hmm... If only Haru were here. She's much more skilled with these than I. [Yes, he's talking about the tiny girl with fluffy hair who wears pink and likes flowers. Yusuke puts the axe down and finds a handsaw that seems a lot more wieldy.] Ah, here we are.

If there's nothing dry to be collected from the ground, let's use these to cut the smaller branches. It's a shame to mutilate the beauty of trees, but...

Just a branch or two shouldn't hurt the tree too badly. It's not as though we need to fell a whole forest, we shouldn't be stuck out here that long.

[Yusuke heads off, and with a little scavenging, and a little tree mutilation, he manages to gather a substantial pile of mostly dry logs to use. He doesn't, however, return to their designated meeting spot within ten minutes. Or fifteen. Or twenty.

If Kaiba goes to look for him, he'll find Yusuke sitting on the bank of a frozen stream, his log pile beside him as he looks up to admire the frozen waterfall he'd stumbled across. He's even muttering to himself.]

Simply breathtaking...

[Kaiba does go looking, as after finding some dry-enough wood and an ill-advised tree battle that he's happy no one actually saw him not win (it was a strategic withdrawal), he still had time to wait around long enough to get--not quite "worried," but perhaps "concerned," given his group's wildlife encounters the previous day. So he keeps quiet as he stalks through the forest, axe in hand, listening for breathing or footsteps or Something Worse. It's kind of anti-climactic when he finally comes across the waterfall and Yusuke looks all in one piece]

[Yusuke looks around for a brief moment, and smiles when he spots Kaiba, oblivious to any concern he may have caused.]

Ah, so you've arrived. Would you care to join me? I have been admiring the sight of this waterfall, suspended in time by winter's icy grasp.

[Translation: this thing is pretty and he likes it.]

.........You've been here the whole time, just...sitting.

[Kaiba is not really sure what expression he's wearing, definitely incredulous and a little red-faced and hopefully not too relieved but either way he's pretty sure it's gonna get real angry real soon]

Actually, I've also been standing, and climbing. I attempted to scale along the rocks for a better view, but without the appropriate gear, it proved too dangerous.

Promptly turns right back around to scoop up the logs he'd forgotten. Oops.]

[Kaiba's not really sure where he's going, because he's too busy working on not yelling or punching a tree. Even though he's really good at yelling! (As an aside, trees can suck it.) But he is trying! To interact with people like a normal human being! Even though he's really not sure why anymore, the whole point of being rich is that you can pay your way out of human interactions.

[That said, he stops himself mid-flounce because angry or not, walking aimlessly through snowy woods is probably a Bad Idea. If only any of this looked any different than any other part of this. PS: Trees suck.]
